What’s Under My Airplane Seat?

Under this airplane seat you will see the essential flight accessories I travel with.  Watching the video is easiest to explain what I carry on most flights.  Whether you’re traveling for a weekend or a longer vacation, check out what is in my carryon back pack.  Notice that my carryon suitcase is above my airplane seat.  This video is about what I travel with in my back pack carry on.

4 Things You Must Do in Portland, Maine

We just visited Portland Maine and I have four things that you must do while touring.  All of the hubbub happens in Old Port.  It’s got a lot of modern, hip tours and lobster rolls to try too.  We even saw the Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas cruise ship docking in Portland, Maine.  Do not miss the views in Portland, Maine.  POP into my video and I’ll tell you four gorgeous and delicious things you must do in Portland, Maine.

Lobster Roll

If you ask 20 people in Portland where to get the best Lobster Roll, you will get 20 different answers.  A local Portland friend named Tarilyn recommended Scales in Old Port, Portland – upscale in price not in dress.  Wear what you want-you’re in a fishing port.  But for the most part, it’s business casual at night.  MAKE RESERVATIONS!!!  This place is a local favorite.  My seared scallops and seared bacon chunks in a poblano corn sauce was to die for and was $30ish and came in a big black skillet.  My mom got the whole lobster, which they do all the work to help you dig in easily.  We also got fried cauliflower; it was too thickly battered but still delicious.

Bite Into Maine has 3 locations – Portland Head Light Lighthouse, an airstream by the Allagash Brewing Co and their own brick and mortar store opening soon. Lobster Roll sometimes has mayo lightly mixed into the lobster meat and sometimes it’s not.  We found them by the Portland Head Light Lighthouse.  Food truck right there by the three huge parking lots.

Pro:  several large parking lots.  When you enter the park (free), keep going to the right and you’ll see it in-between the three parking lots.  You can choose several different options in how it’s prepared for you.  You have to watch my video above to see really HOW MUCH lobster is in one roll!

Con: can’t sit inside anywhere if yucky weather

Picnic style is no mayo and on top of mayo based slaw in a folded piece of huge Texas toast. Warm, melted butter drizzled all over it!!!!  My fave style!

Curried mayo

Chipotle mayo

mayo

dollop of mayo with a jalapeño

Lobster Shack – At Two Lights Lighthouse.  Only parking for about 20 cars unless you drive back up the hill two houses and park in the little parking lot that’s there.  The port authority worker told us that this place wins the best lobster roll every year.  I could not find that stat anywhere though.

Portland Lobster Co – where all the other shops and cruise ships park, this is in Old Port, the hubbub of Portland, so while you’re here you might as well check it out.  When we did a drive by, people were standing shoulder to shoulder inside.  They do have a dock.  Just if it’s yucky weather, you may have to wait a while.

Honestly, you’re going to have fresh lobster so it depends on what you want.  Do you want a quiet and beautiful view?  Got to the food truck Bite Into Maine at the Portland Head Light Lighthouse.  If you want views and ability to sit inside, Lobster Shack.  Don’t care and no car?  Portland Lobster Co.

Take a Tour

Y’all this is the most bang for your buck when visiting a town like Portland, Maine.  You will be so glad you tried it.  You pick the tour.  Here’s a list from their site, but check dates because winter time tours are limited.

http://www.mainefoodietours.com/Portland.html

Maine Foodie Tours allow you better choices for your family to tour.  You can even choose the type of tour-just happy hour, art tour, lunchtime lobster crawl tour, culinary tour and many more! We are huge fans of food tours over in Europe.  Maine Foodie Tours, like other food tours, give you the quirky facts of that restaurant, that food, and that area.  Your guide also can give you his/her tips on individual questions concerning touring because he/she is a local.

Ours was $60 for 3 hours of food!!!  Don’t forget some cash to tip the guide.  You’re going to want to tip him fyi because they end up being lovable and so friendly!  They have a lunchtime lobster crawl tour!  WOW!

For example, I had heard to go to the observation tower up Munjoy Hill.  Asked our guide about it, and Avery gave me an ever better idea.  Plus how to get there most easily if driving.  And the food samples will fill you up!!!

Portland, mainly is the Old Port area.  That is a half a mile MAYBE.  Old Port is a 4 by 20 block rectangle.

It was 68 degrees, and I still needed a cardigan if just standing still in the shade fyi.  If you’re going to be on an open air truck, dress with warm layers!!!  Chilly at almost 70 degrees!

East Promenade

Take Uber or drive or tour to East Promenade.  You will not be disappointed unless it’s completely fogged in.  And go in the afternoon when the sun will be behind you, making the water seem bright deep blue.  Gorgeous views, plenty of free parking for RVs, cars and bikes.  Take the kids; there’s a playground.  There are several open fields and a little history monument spot.

It’s a great spot to get a quick walk in for some fresh air and jump right back in your car.  It’s also a great spot to just take a nap on a towel.

Go east on Congress, up the steep hill and just keep going.  It’ll dead end into the huge, expansive East Promenade.  You will pass the look out tower, but hardly any parking is there because you can get to it via foot traffic.

Lighthouses

Two Lights Lighthouse: You can see the Two Light Lighthouses, but they’re just okay.  And we only could find one of them; maybe the other one has a light but not in the stereotypical house?

Portland Head Light Lighthouse in Fort Williams Park – ample free parking, quick 15 minute drive from Old Port, great for pictures.  Aaaand they have Bite Into Maine lobster rolls!!!

Con: Port-a-Potties.  Ick!  Yuk!  I was so disappointed!  But the ocean and lighthouse views were one of the most photographed places.

The Easiest “Party Nail” for This Summer

//rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/cm?o=1&p=13&l=ez&f=ifr&linkID=5299ce778e423adbbc8a9b688434f304&t=la0456-20&tracking_id=la0456-20

This summer I’m guiding you to the easiest and smartest ways to create your own nail art for a beach trip. It’s your “party nail” – that’s when one fingernail design is having its own party.  The nine other nails have a solid nail polish color – the wall flowers of your party.  Which is  your nearest ocean: the Atlantic, off of California, in the Bahamas, the US Virgin Islands?  Let’s make nail art for the summer.

Nice to meet you!  POP over to my YouTube Channel to see more detailed pics and demonstrations!

3 Things POP into my head when painting a “party nail” on my fingernails for a beach trip.

1. What colors match my bathing suit?

Some of you may not care if the nails match completely.  I just want them to blend.

2. What glitter do I have?

The color of your solids determines which color glitter you will want.

3. Do I want the party nail to blend with the other nails or really POP with its own party?  Muted or Pizzazz?

Wedding ring was off because I was on the way to sinus surgery.

My nail art is flamingo inspired for the beach this summer.  I loved the pinks and gold in my Recollection stickers so I ended up going with a fuchsia pink beside the gold.

I debated whether or not to use my favorite pink: A-rose at Dawn, Broke by Noon.  In the end, it had too much silver that does not go with gold.

Then I started thinking, wait, flamingos are salmon colored-not fuchsia.  So you can try that orangey tone next to the gold.  I don’t like it as much as I like the Kiss Me On My Tulips by OPI.  Then I put glitter on top of the orange color, and it can give you a much more muted but fun beachy look.

I wanted my party nail to really stand out, and the best way to do that is by using the lightest color in the gold glitter.

Look closely; see the white in that gold?  So my base color should be the lightest color that is in the glitter….

The best ever white fingernail polish is Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear White On.  Here is a sample of a cheapy cheap white by Sinful Colors-that’s what was cheapest in my grocery store that day.  They’re mostly milky.  OPI has a better one, Alpine Snow, but it still not the best.

This stuff is like white out.  Raise your hand if you ever painted your nails with white out in school in the 80s….

Glitter Nail Polish

When you’re picking out glitter, make sure it is condensed looking.  You do not want the ones that have big pieces of glitter or sequin type pieces (below).  It’s super extra sticky, which makes it hard to get off.  Plus, it has minimal impact.  You hardly see the party.  No one will want to attend that party. glitter-nail-art-summer

See how the gold and purple glitter are like a powder?  That will give you more impact.  More bang for your effort.

When using a blue toned glitter, the base color can be a lighter purple, a pink or a light pink.  So I’m going to try all three and show you the different party offerings.

So then I tried white because I do see white in this glitter.  Look how it is turning out on the video above.  It makes me not like this glitter as much.  It looks goopy and not very condensed.  BUT what if we painted our other nails a I’m Not Really a Waitress (red), and this white one with silver, red and blue glitter POPped?  Looks like a patriotic party, right?  That’s next week’s nail art for sure!  Happy Summer Beach Trippin, friends!

Top Things to Take on Your Cruise

Your cruise to the Caribbean, to the Bahamas out of Miami, or a Mediterranean Cruise is going to be so much fun.  Here are the top things to take.  You don’t want to forget these top things on your cruise.  If your ship stops at a beach location like the Caribbean, I suggest bringing a small soft cooler.  You can save money by taking your own water bottles and snacks.  And it keeps them cool!

A drawstring cinch sack bag will come in handy because you can store an iPad, snacks, book, keys and passports, etc.  You could even get them monogrammed and have one for each family member.  CUTE!

dont-forget-to-take-magnet-caribbean-cruise Take magnets to decorate your cabin door.  You can even take this magnetized lightweight dry erase board.  Kids and you will recognize it from far away.  And you can write notes to your steward. magnets-top-things-to-take-cruise

I packed my Cleanser and Vaseline in these containers to save space in my carryon suitcase liquids bag.  They hold alot.  I love love love writing the contents on cute washi tape from my planner onto these.  In the video, you’ll see how little of my cleanser I actually used.  Do you wear alot of makeup while on vacation?  I want to, but I always end up not.  I packed vaseline in case your legs get chapped at a beach stop.

Go-toob to the rescue.  I was in Europe for 10 days, and this is how much I had left in the shampoo bottle.  They’re tiny but huge! top-things-cruise-shampoo

This waterproof phone case with a lanyard is so awesome!  cruise-water-proof-case-phoneBut we found that we didn’t use it all the time.  If you will be at the beach, I can highly recommend this.  It’s an Amazon Top Buy product.  Solid, and you can use your fingers through the plastic case.  I also think just a key card lanyard would be awesome especially for kids who are on the unlimited soda package and for getting on and off the ship.

If you will have time to enjoy coffee on the deck or a cool drink, we wish we would’ve taken our aluminum mugs.  The ship’s coffee mugs are tiny!  Plus you can dump the fruity drinks in there to stay cool as well.

Since we needed to carry passports, I suggest taking a Buddy Pouch that is the strongest velcro carrier I’ve ever seen.  It’s magnetized and does not budge from your shorts waist band.  We also used this Pink Portable Charger for our cell phones.  You can stick it through the hole to charge your phone while you’re on a train or bus or tendering.  Do you see the little zipper?

Totally fun thing to not forget is these clips to hold your towel down on deck.  Super windy!  They just make me smile!  They come in all kinds of beach styles.

take-cruise-top-outletsThe #1 top thing to bring on a cruise ship is a rotating power strip.  Cruise ships only have two American ones in your whole room!  I love mine!

Y’all seriously should ask for the //z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US&adInstanceId=aefa88f9-1a4c-47f1-9643-87b2c1879d16” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Amazon Prime as a birthday gift!  I got most everything in my list with free 2-3 day shipping

And my all-time favorite book to read at a beach location is The Devil in the Junior League.  It is about exactly what it sounds like.  Cute but really good!cruise-pool-top-things-to-take-bahamas-
